Some people are simple wired from birth to be more "psychic" than others. And some sense this awareness after having a near death experience. But what about the rest of us-can we increase our ability to receive spiritual guidance through clear seeing, hearing, feeling and knowing? Scientific evidence points to an answer of yes-we can increase our openness from wherever we are on our life path. How can we encourage this development? Many writers tell us that the way of opening is through the open-heart. So what can we do to stay in the openhearted space-many have found the way by using yoga, tai chi, chi gong or other slow meditative movement, meditation practice, or other right-brain practices.
The right brain is the home of the altered state where sensory perception, emotional acuity, imagination, dreaming, holistic thinking, creativity, and mystical experience all exist. As one uses guided imagery or meditates, blood chemistry is actually altered-endorphins and enkaphalins are released which are the bodies natural antidepressants and tranquilizers. Belleruth Naparstek reports in her book Your Sixth Sense, Unlocking the Power of Your Intuition on the research done by Elmer and Alyce Green who were early pioneers in biofeedback and altered state research at the Menninger Foundation. Once in an altered state, many of their subjects reported a very high number of spontaneous ESP experiences, particularly during theta (the state our brains slip into just before falling asleep). Theta induces hypnagogic images, the sudden clear, startling sensory images that pop into consciousness from nowhere.
How Can We Develop More Clarity in Our Lives as healing practitioners?
1. Clear and still the mind of all the busyness of analyzing, worrying, judging, remembering, and comparing.
It is only when the heart and the mind are calm that our intuition and the voice of God can be heard.
2. Have beliefs.
Belief in an all loving and knowing God who deeply cares about us actually increases our ability to receive guidance.
3. Have a clear intention.
When working with a client-state your intention before you start and if you get stuck or puzzled during your work-go back to your intention. You are deliberately setting your intention, declaring your goals and asking for spiritual guidance. You are not "making" anything happen-you are simply opening to receiving. It's best not to be too specific in your intention-ask for the highest good for the other person, whatever that may be. Ask to be a conduit, a vessel, in instrument of healing-to be of service. By not presuming to know what is in the other person's highest good, you avoid falling into preconceived attachments to particular outcomes. Be clear in your intention. This will reflect your code of integrity-one where you do not use your skills, knowledge and intuitive abilities to harm or manipulate another person.
4. One final suggestion- learn the meaning of surrender.
Simply allow God to work in and through you. This is the receptive mode or the detached state of mind. The spiritual masters of all spiritual paths will give you this advise.
