The archangels are an order of angels that serve as protectors over the whole of humankind. They seem to have the bigger picture as their responsibility whereas the guardian angels are assigned to individuals-a kind of special assignment! This does not prevent the archangels from intervening in the lives of each of us when we call upon them. Michael, Raphael and Gabriel all brought divine messages to individuals in the scriptures. To invoke their power is to ask for their light and strength to guide us to the presence of God. Don't worry about over-burdening them with requests. They are able to be with everyone simultaneously who need them. Time and space are not limits for these angels. Writings throughout history refer to various numbers of archangels. In the book of Tobit, Raphael is clearly identified as one of the "seven" holy angels who attend the throne of God. The number seven is referred to in the Kabala, in the writings of the Christian Gnostics, Gregory the Great, and Dionysius. Generally the names of Michael, Raphael, Gabriel and Uriel are mentioned while the other three archangel names vary according to source.
The Angel of Healing
Raphael means "God Heals" and is one of these seven angels who stand ever ready to enter the presence of the glory of the Lord. Raphael is the messenger of Divine Providence; he brings healing to all who seek wholeness. He assists us to heal our bodies, minds and spirits and to achieve wholeness. When we open our hearts and call for Raphael's assistance, he guides us to the healers, physicians, and counselors needed for our return to wholeness. It was Raphael who was sent as messenger to heal Tobit of his blindness and to take care of his son during a long journey. The angel took the boy to catch a fish from the Tigris River. He used the gall to make an eye ointment to cure Tobit's blindness while the reek of the fish heart and gall burned on a censer drove the demons away from the young daughter-in-law Sarah. The story ends with Raphael reminding us that it is God who is the healer and God to whom praise is due.
Raphael is also one of the three angels that visited Abraham according to the Kabala. The other two were Michael and Gabriel. Raphael is credited in these writings with healing Abraham of the pain of circumcision and was also the angel sent by God to cure Jacob of the injury to his thigh when Jacob wrestled with his dark adversary.
There is a tradition that many Christians believed that the angel who stirred the waters at the pool of Bethesda was indeed, the Angel Raphael. He was the healing angel. Raphael is available to you in your healing work just as he was there for Tobit and his family and at the pool of Bethesda. He is able to lend practical assistance in the healing of body, mind, soul and spirit. Do not hesitate to call upon his special assistance in your healing sessions.
