Work Your Hamstrings!

By Ryan Kelly

The hamstrings are not a muscle that people think of very often. In fact, I have never heard someone say, "Wow, that guy has awesome hamstrings! He must do a ton of leg curls!" Still, the hamstrings are a very important muscle, and it must be developed just like any other muscle.

The first reason for this is that if your quadriceps become too large relative to your hamstrings then your hamstrings will tear. This is the reason why so many runners get torn hamstring injuries. They run so much that their quadriceps become large and powerful, but they don't work their hamstrings enough to compensate for the power of their quads. Eventually, the hamstrings will tear under the pressure of the more powerful quadriceps.

The second reason for hamstring importance is that they are a very important muscle in your leg. They assist when you do squats and leg presses, and play an important part when you walk or run. Letting such an important muscle atrophy is not a good idea!

The third reason hamstrings are important is that they DO look good, even if people do not realize it. A strong pair of hamstrings completes a well defined lower body, and although people may not give them their due, the leg will look so odd without them that people would notice if they were lagging. Although they may not be noticed if they are present, people will defiantly notice something is wrong if they are missing.

So, work this important muscle hard to have the balanced, toned lower body of a champion!
