Tips For a Brighter Smile With Homemade Teeth Whitening Products

By Lee Overton

Over-the-counter whitening products are readily available, so available in fact that they have great possibility for misuse. Always ask your dentist's advice about these products as some of them may contain solutions and acids that could damage your teeth's enamel.

Luckily the guidelines provided by the ADA state that at-home bleaching products should not be harmful to either teeth or the soft tissues of the mouth, and that it can effectively whiten the teeth.

You can recognize products that are ADA-approved because they will bear the ADA's "Seal of Acceptance." Since earning the ADA's seal is expensive and time-consuming for a producer, not to mention optional, the fact that the manufacturer went through this step is a good sign of its commitment to creating a quality product.

However, this is not to say that home teeth whitening products without the ADA seal are useless. In fact, you may even notice your own dentist using dental products without the ADA Seal of Acceptance. There are many reasons for this such as:

The product could be a generic of an ADA-approved product on the market, just like other medications.

The product could contain a level of carbamide peroxide that is greater than 10%, which is stronger than what ADA guidelines set but which your dentist believes is the proper solution for your needs.

After deciding on what home whitening product to use, your next step is what you should do prior to treatment. Certainly, brushing your teeth is mandatory.

But while you may be satisfied with just brushing, home teeth whitening solutions work best on squeaky clean teeth. That means, you should also floss, in addition to brushing.

Most products come with a mouth tray that is used to hold the bleach and keep it in contact with your teeth. Try on the mouth trays first without any bleach.

It is important to try the trays first so you can see if they fit properly. Remember that you will likely be wearing the mouth tray for several minutes to an hour so comfort is key. Dropping these trays in very hot water for a minute or so will make them pliable and they will mold to your teeth.

Lastly, make sure that the mouth trays are clean and dry before you apply the whitening solution. Any moisture in the trays will reduce the efficiency of the product. It may even slow down the whitening process.

One significant thing to remember when applying the bleaching solution or gel is to make sure that you do not over-fill the trays. Place only a drop or two of teething whitening solution. The recommended amount per arch is around 0.5ml of whitening solution.

The solution must not reach beyond half way up on the inner front surface of the tray - i.e., the front of each tooth in the tray. Also, do not spread the gel around. Make sure the solution stays put.

Then insert the tray in your mouth over the teeth and seat the tray firmly against the teeth.

Some excess whitening or bleaching solution may seep over the brim of the tray onto your gums as you fit it in. If this happens, just wipe with a piece of cloth while holding the tray up with one hand.

For best results, keep the bleaching tray in your mouth for the suggested wearing time. The wearing time may differ from product to product, usually depending on the percentage of solution and the amount of stains.

After wearing the home teeth whitening product for the correct period of time just remove the tray and rinse your teeth with water. If there is any solution left, brush it away. Brush, floss, and continue with your daily routine dental cleaning.
