If biceps are the ultimate ego muscle, abdominals are a very close second. So many people train only to have visible abs for the beach or poolside. Although it is bad to only train your abdominals, they are certainly a prominent and attractive body part, and one that is worthy of particular attention. The question, however, is what is the best way to train the abdominals? Well, there are two things you need to know.
The most important thing to understand about abs is that their look is more dependent on diet than any other body part. You can have strong abs that look horrible if you have a layer of fat over them. Since the abs are located under belly fat, and since the human body stores fat in the belly before it stores it in other body parts, just a small amount of body fat can obscure the abdominal region. Conversely, you have weak abs that look great if you have very low body fat. So many people who have never done a crunch in their life have awesome abs just from being ultra thin.
The second thing you should know about abdominal training is that since most people do not want large abs, you should train abdominals with very high reps and very little weight. In most cases, body weight is enough to do abdominal movements. If you do ab moves with more weight your abdominals will hypertrophy, or get bigger. This is not the look most people want!
So, do abdominal workouts with high reps, and keep your body fat low. Soon, you'll be ready for that trip to the beach to show off your new six pack!
