What is Acid Reflux?

Before we go into that, you need to get a better understanding of what acid reflux is and its symptoms. When a person eats the stomach produces a type of acid that helps to break down food so that it can be digested.

The stomach has a small valve between it and the esophagus that keeps this acid in the stomach where it belongs. Acid reflux refers to a condition when this acid spills over the top of the stomach, past the valve, and back up into the esophagus.

So How Does Acid Reflux Cause Bad Breath?

Remember that the breath doesn't just come from the mouth. Any air passing over the sinuses, the back of the throat, and even coming up from the stomach and digestive system is expelled out the mouth as breath. As you can see, these acids and the small bits of food particles and other elements in this mixture can affect the air that we call our breath.

Many people that have acid reflux get a bitter taste in their mouth or often feel as if they've thrown up in their own mouths; this is because that acid from the stomach can travel as far as the throat and mouth. And if the acid can travel that far, obviously the breath can be affected by this acid as well!

Does Acid Reflux Cause Bad Breath in Everyone?

Not everyone that has acid reflux is automatically going to have bad breath, although it's not that uncommon. Anyone with this condition should be doing everything they can to get it under control, as it is very serious, and bad breath is just one symptom of the damage it may be doing to your system.
