Family and Individual Health Insurance Premiums Tips and Helpful Information

By Dean Calvert

With the obvious Health Insurance crisis going on in America today, you can never find enough ways to keep your premiums under control. We will share some tips that will assist you in keeping the costs manageable.

1. Most people are advised to opt in to group coverage if their employer offers it. But, while it is typically a good deal for the employee, I have seen many times that the family health insurance package for most group plans can get expensive quickly. It will serve you well to see if there are plans more affordable to put the family on and have the group coverage on yourself only.

2. With the technology age you can now get a health insurance quote that only takes minutes, and it will pull up most of the insurance companies offering plans in your state. This will not only save time, but you can compare in a spreadsheet style. make sure to compare benefits as well as premiums. The old saying cheaper is not always better definitely applies to health insurance.

3. Health Care costs soaring have caused many people to raise their deductible to hold on to an insurance policy. This does work well, and another option to consider is if you are looking for a plan or already have one, some now offer a critical illness and accident rider that will cover up to the deductible. This can keep premiums in line and the fact is most people (about 70%) would only hit the deductible due to a critical illness or an accident. Review your situation and do what you feel is right for you and your family.

4. If you are in the self employed health insurance arena there are now many plans that offer association benefits for help with emergency visits, medications that may not be covered by your plan and numerous other options. If you are looking at a health insurance quote, see if these association benefits are part of the package. It will save you some money, and the benefits are already included in the premium of the plan.

5. Cutting out doctor visits on a plan will lower costs tremendously but this should be done with some calculation. The average cost of a doctor visit nationwide is about $80, so the best rule of thumb is when looking for or adjusting your health insurance coverage calculate how much the premium for having the doctor visits costs and then how many times all family members go to a doctor annually. If you are comfortable with the savings then this is one of many ways to keep your premium affordable.
